Pursuing a Cure through Clinical Trials  

Be part of finding a cure! Breakthrough T1D advocates for patients living with type 1 diabetes (T1D) by raising funds for research and clinical trials – you can be part of advancing that knowledge by enrolling in a clinical trial (pending eligibility requirements).  

 Participating in a clinical trial helps research for T1D move forward and become an approved treatment for those living with T1D. Trials are being conducted right now and the impact of COVID has stalled enrollment in these vital studies so if interested, please consider participating. To learn more about the importance of clinical trials click here.  

Clinical Trials in Illinois 

TOPPLE study- “Tolerance Using Plasmid” 

• This study is testing the safety of a new treatment, NNC0361-0041, in adults with T1D. The treatment is a plasmid vector designed to transfer DNA into cells, where it can communicate with the immune system. 

PROTECT Trial 

• This study will assess how well an investigational medicine, teplizumab, works in children and adolescents recently diagnosed with T1D.  This drug has not been approved for treatment, and this clinical study is helping to determine its utility with patients with T1D. 

Sernova Trial 

• This study will assess the safety, tolerability, and efficacy of the Sernova Cell Pouch™ that will be implanted under the skin, and transplanted with islets
