Join us for the 2026 Breakthrough T1D Iowa Community Summit in West Des Moines!

The FREE event provides a morning of education, inspiration, and connection for the type 1 diabetes (T1D) community (available to all ages and stages of T1D). Learn about latest breakthroughs in T1D research, hear about important topics, meet with diabetes exhibitors, connect with others impacted by T1D, and so much more!

TrialNet type 1 diabetes (T1D) screening will be available at no cost from Iowa Diabetes throughout the entire event!

TrialNet risk screening is free for relatives of people with T1D: ages 2–45 with a first-degree relative or ages 2–20 with a second-degree relative.

Everyone who registers AND attends will receive a Breakthrough T1D t-shirt!

Youth & Teen Program (for grades K – 12th grade) will be available from 9:30 am to Noon. Limited space.

8:30 am – 9:30 am: Exhibitor Fair and Networking

8:30 am – Noon: TrialNet type 1 diabetes (T1D) screening will be available at no cost from Iowa Diabetes throughout the entire event!

9:15 am – 9:30 am: Youth and Teen Program Check-In

9:30 am – 10:20 am: Welcome and Keynote Speaker

Keynote: Amy Hummer is a T1D advocate and mother to son, Max, diagnosed with T1D in 2019. Amy serves as our Mission Impact Volunteer on the Breakthrough T1D Eastern Iowa Board. She will share the inspiring news in the world of T1D research!

10:20 am – 10:30 am: Break

10:30 am – 11:15 am: Session

Kathryn Sinclair, MSN, BSN, RN, CDCES – Kathryn has been a nurse for 11 years and has worked for the last 3 years at Blank Children’s as a diabetes educator. She helped create the curriculum and teaches the Pump 101 class. She will present on six different insulins pumps available for individuals who have type 1 diabetes. In addition, she will share about the CGMs that are available and work with these pumps as well as who is eligible, the main differences between the pumps, and how their algorithms work.

11:15 am – 11:25 am: Break

11:25 am – 12:00 pm: Session

Iowa Diabetes Staff, Whitney Ceretti and Kara Turner, will share about the importance of T1D early detection screening, how families can get screened, and what to do if you have positive autoantibodies and the options of available disease-modifying therapies.
