Fund A Cure with Sonja and Ben Hawbaker | Breakthrough T1D Cedar Rapids Gala 2026

For Ben and Sonja, the mission of Breakthrough T1D is more than a cause—it is their family’s story. Ben was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes more than 30 years ago at just 18 years old while he was a freshman in college. Decades later, in 2015, their son Nate was also diagnosed with T1D. With several other young adults in their family living with the condition, Breakthrough T1D’s mission is especially meaningful to them.

Driven by their family’s experiences, Ben and Sonja have become passionate advocates for Breakthrough T1D. As small business owners, they have generously used their community connections to inspire family, friends, and fellow business leaders to join the fight for cures. Their commitment extends far beyond financial support—they give their time, share their story, volunteer, and faithfully support the Promise Gala each year. In 2025, Sonja expanded her leadership by joining the Gala Committee, helping ensure that even more families affected by T1D have hope for a brighter future.
