The J KC – Jewish Community Center
Type 1 diabetes (T1D) is often thought of as a childhood disease, but nearly half of new diagnoses in the United States occur in adults age 18 and older. Many of those adults never see it coming, and many families don’t realize that T1D can be detected years before symptoms appear.
Jewish populations carry a slightly elevated genetic risk for autoimmune conditions like T1D, linked to a higher frequency of certain immune-related genetic markers. Combined with a well-connected, health-conscious Kansas City Jewish community, that makes early detection an opportunity not just a risk to worry about.
On Sunday, October 25, from 1:30 to 3 p.m., Breakthrough T1D is partnering with the Jewish Federation of Greater Kansas City and area synagogues to bring that opportunity home. “Protecting Our Families: Understanding and Detecting Type 1 Diabetes Early” will be held at the Jewish Community Center and is free and open to the community.
