Closing the gap between access and adoption

Increasing adoption to improve health

Closing the gap between access to and adoption of type 1 diabetes therapies is a mission priority for Breakthrough T1D.

Our Medical Affairs unit focuses on:

  • Developing educational materials for healthcare professionals (HCP) in the U.S. and around the world.
  • Empowering people with type 1 diabetes (T1D) to participate in shared decision-making with their healthcare teams about emerging T1D therapies.
  • Helping to establish and socialize clinical care guidelines tailored to regional needs.
  • Expanding clinical trial participation through community activation and HCP education.

Challenges we are addressing

The T1D care paradigm has changed thanks to new advances in devices and therapeutics. HCPs need current, easily accessible information to help drive timely adoption of emerging therapies.

HCPs need comprehensive guidelines to support new, approved treatment options.

We need modern care environments, with the right staffing model, expertise, and facilities to deliver advanced T1D therapies and treatments, including therapies that require infusions like Tzield, and treatments that require implantation, such as cell therapies.

There are too few endocrinologists and certified diabetes care and education specialists with knowledge and competency in advanced type 1 diabetes therapies.

By addressing systemic barriers and fostering clinical readiness, Breakthrough T1D will be pivotal in driving the timely adoption of emerging type 1 diabetes therapies and transforming care.”

Accredited, free-of-charge, and live/on-demand resources about early detection, monitoring guidance for positive test results, clinical trial opportunities, and the latest cutting-edge T1D therapy research and development.

Type 1 diabetes doesn’t show up overnight—it develops in stages over time. Detecting T1D early allows you to prepare for future needs and even delay its onset. Learn about screening for type 1 diabetes and how to address positive test results.

Clinical trials are a vital step for any treatment, drug, or device to make it into the hands of people with type 1 diabetes. We make it as easy as possible to learn more about clinical trials, particularly for those newly diagnosed with T1D, when timely participation is critical to testing therapies that protect the body’s ability to produce insulin.

Why Medical Affairs?

During the past decade, we’ve seen numerous breakthroughs for type 1 diabetes become available, including the first therapy approved to delay the need for insulin, automated insulin delivery systems, and the first islet replacement therapy. Yet, adoption has been slow, delaying the life-changing potential of these groundbreaking T1D therapies.
