Breakthrough T1D Detroit Promise Ball 2026

George Grunberger, MD, FACP, MACE, is the Chairman of Grunberger Diabetes and Endocrinology in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan. Dr. Grunberger, an experienced diabetologist, is also a Clinical Professor of Internal Medicine and Molecular Medicine & Genetics at Wayne State University School of Medicine, a Professor of Internal Medicine at Oakland University William Beaumont School of Medicine, and a Visiting Professor of Internal Medicine at First Faculty of Medicine at Charles University in Prague, Czech Republic.

He is an active member of the American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists (Past President), the American Diabetes Association, The Endocrine Society, European Association for Study of Diabetes, and American College of Physicians. He serves on the national board of directors of Children With Diabetes.

Dr. Grunberger has been committed to Breakthrough T1D’s, formerly JDRF, mission as a practitioner and researcher for more than 45 years. He has served on the Chapter board of directors and was instrumental in establishing Breakthrough T1D’s TypeOneNation Summit in 2007; serving as chair for the annual educational event, which is one of the largest in the nation.

Sarah’s journey with type 1 diabetes (T1D) started on May 30, 2005. That was the day her son Marcus, at age nine, was diagnosed with T1D. Her family was living in Beijing, China, and soon learned that we weren’t the only ones that had no clue what this disease entailed. The medical professionals in Beijing tried to be helpful, but their knowledge on T1D was very limited. I took charge, leading Marcus and our family on this fresh path. One, that in more than twenty years has led Sarah and her family to Breakthrough T1D.

Four days after Jill took her son for his four-year-old preschool check-up she wound up in the hospital with a T1D diagnosis.  She didn’t know where to turn and found Breakthrough T1D (then JDRF).  Jill found an organization founded by parents just like her who were not satisfied with learning how to live with T1D, they were determined to find a cure for their children. That resonated with her and Jill knew if she could play even a small role with this organization, she would be helping to make a difference.
