Meet the Thompson Family: Christi, Robbie, Beckett, Emme, & Charlie
Donate in their honor
A little over 5 years ago, at the beginning of a two week long spring break from school, Beckett Thompson, then just 4 years old, was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes (T1D). It was a life-changing diagnosis for the entire family as Beckett’s parents, Christi and Robbie, got a crash course in managing T1D while attempting to keep things as normal as possible for their family. Outside of the obvious challenges around learning how to count carbs and give insulin doses, resuming normal life for Beckett proved difficult. Now 9 years old, Beckett, Christi, and Robbie have the support of family, Beckett’s friends (and their parents), teachers, school nurses, and the Breakthrough T1D community.
“During the first couple of days after Beckett’s diagnosis, while at Hopkins, he received a countless number of insulin shots and finger pricks. We can vividly remember Beckett asking how many more times he’ll need to receive insulin shots or when diabetes will go away. Telling him that we aren’t sure is an awful thing to have to tell your kid. However, we have seen first-hand how the support from Breakthrough T1D has led to drastic improvements in how he manages his diabetes – glucose monitors and insulin pumps have become more interconnected and his A1C levels have benefited. Beckett also knows that the path towards a cure for T1D is largely supported by Breakthrough T1D, which gives us all something to hope for,” said Robbie.
Breakthrough T1D-funded research has not only improved the lives of the Thompsons but also the lives of countless other families living with T1D. Breakthrough T1D focuses on what the type 1 diabetes community needs now and next. Your 100% tax-deductible contribution will continue to open doors that were once closed by a T1D diagnosis and will accelerate life-changing breakthroughs to cure, prevent, and treat T1D and it’s complications.
