People with signs of islet autoimmunity (or the immune attack against insulin-producing islets cells) are at increased risk of developing type 1 diabetes (T1D). Yet, these individuals develop T1D within different timeframes, and some do not develop T1D at all. Brigitte Frohnert, M.D., is a pediatric endocrinologist at University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus in the Barbara Davis Center. With Breakthrough T1D support, Dr. Frohnert is conducting an innovative study to answer why some children with signs of islet autoimmunity progress to T1D more quickly than others. Using cutting-edge technology and big data, Dr. Frohnert is looking both at genetic background and exposures to omega-3 fatty acids in the diet to understand the factors that may lead to rapid progression to T1D.
