About

Our Breakthrough T1D Hike Don’t Spike event for adults on Saturday, May 9, will be a peaceful and varied ramble through the creek ravines and rolling knolls of Sunol Wilderness.  This moderate ~7-mile hike with a 1,000-foot total ascent takes full advantage of this hidden gem of a park with its abundant wildflowers, butterflies, flora & fauna that congregate along Alameda Creek, which drains the largest watershed in the Bay Area.  The hike (AllTrails map link) takes us to Little Yosemite (a rocky gorge of Alameda Creek), the Big W tree, and Indian Joe Rock Cave.  After the initial 3 miles on a wide dirt-and-gravel road parallel to Alameda Creek, we transition to a narrow single-track trail for the rest of the hike, which takes us up and down the hills, crisscrosses Indian Joe Creek, and affords panoramic views of the Wilderness.  The hike can also be shortened to ~5 miles for those who need to finish early.  Dogs are allowed, but note that the narrow hillside trails may be difficult to navigate if they are not under good control.

Of course, we’ll have plenty of time during this 3–4-hour hike to exchange experiences, insights, and questions about T1D.  We’ll meet promptly at 9:30 AM in the Visitor Center parking lot (Google Map link). Parking is available (a $5 fee may be in effect) with bathrooms nearby, but there is no cell service.
