Empowered and Protected: Your Rights as a Person with T1D
Daniel is the Founder, Chairman, and Chief Executive Officer of the Type 1 Action Foundation, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization
dedicated to protecting and empowering people with Type 1 Diabetes (T1D). Through the Type 1 Action Foundation, Daniel has helped thousands of individuals understand and enforce their rights in schools and workplaces, developed free legal and educational resources, and built a nationwide network of attorneys to assist people with T1D requiring legal representation. Daniel also regularly speaks at conferences
and galas throughout the United States about the rights of people with T1D, as well as his personal experiences growing up and playing professional baseball with T1D, in an effort to empower people everywhere to overcome their adversities.
After spending the first ten years of his legal career at major law firms, Daniel founded Phelan Law, P.C., a New York City-based boutique law firm representing businesses and individuals in sophisticated commercial transactions and complex business disputes. In his transactional practice, Daniel represents clients in a broad range of corporate and commercial matters, including mergers and acquisitions, business formations, commercial real estate matters, nonprofit formation and governance, and the negotiation and drafting of operating agreements, partnership agreements, shareholder agreements, franchise agreements, and other business contracts. His litigation practice focuses on complex commercial disputes, including shareholder and partnership disputes, derivative actions, breaches of contract, fraud, conversion, breaches of fiduciary duty, and antitrust and trade regulation matters.
Through his work with the Type 1 Action Foundation, Daniel was the first attorney in the United States to focus a law practice on diabetes law and has helped strengthen legal protections for people with T1D through disability discrimination matters brought in United States District Courts across the country. Today, the Type 1 Action Foundation continues to provide free information and resources to people with T1D concerning their rights in schools and workplaces, while also connecting individuals who need legal assistance with attorneys throughout the United States who can personally represent them
