Until I spoke recently with Aaron Kowalski–Sr. VP for glucose control research at Breakthrough T1D–I hadn’t understood that the infusion sets that come from pump companies aren’t manufactured by the pump companies.

The outsourcing of infusion sets can sometimes mean that while a company like Animas–which makes my fourteen-year-old son’s pump–may be working to refine the sixth generation of their insulin pump, but the technology of the infusion sets might not be improving as steadily.

While keeping up with the rapidly changing technology of pumps and CGMs–and now infusion sets–can be daunting, it can sometimes be worthwhile.

Just last Friday I sent away for free samples of Orbit Infusion Sets, an infusion set that came highly recommended by a friend who prefers them over the Inset 30 sets that comes with our Animas pump.

I’ll let you know how it goes!
