Hello Breakthrough T1D Walkers!

Wow! It’s already August. The summer has really zoomed by. You know what that means – this year’s Walk to Cure Diabetes is a mere two months from now. Just two months away!

If you’re thinking of having a Walk team this year, now is the time to do it. Click here to sign up you, your family and friends for the 2013 Walk to Cure Diabetes.

We are fortunate in the Bay Area to have four spectacular Walks from which to choose:

  • Lover’s Point, Pacific Grove, October 6
  • Oakland Zoo, October 13
  • California’s Great America, Santa Clara, October 20
  • Great Meadow at Fort Mason, San Francisco, October 27

Each Walk has its own flair and personality, so choose the Walk that best suits your friends and family. I’m partial to the Oakland Zoo Walk since it’s close to my home and nestled smack-dab in the heart of the East Bay. (Click here to learn about fun things planned for this Walk!) But you may enjoy the excitement of visiting an amusement park or the natural beauty at Lover’s Point or Fort Mason.

We still have two super fun Kick Off events in August – T1D Night with the World Champion San Francisco Giants on August 9 and an insider’s look at My Museum in Monterey on August 24.

Our Kick Off events are free to attend, but each person who attends must be registered for the Walk and have raised at least $25. The per-person fundraising amount will, of course, count toward your team’s goal for the Walk. Click here to learn more.

Once you’ve registered for a Kick Off event or signed up for a Walk, it’s time to start raising money. The best way to do that is by sending a personal letter or note to absolutely every single person on your contact list. Be sure to include a link to your fundraising page. And be sure to follow up with at least one gentle reminder. You’ll be amazed at how many donations roll in with each reminder you send.

This month’s newsletter features three of our ambassadors for the Walk to Cure Diabetes. They’re truly inspiring young people who are eager to spread the word about the need for a cure.

If you have a creative fundraising idea that’s worked well for your Walk team, please drop me a note at zoe.francis@me.com. Maybe we’ll feature your family in next month’s newsletter.

Remember – it’s time to get moving for this year’s Walks in October. If we all work together, we CAN find a cure!
