T1D Adults – “Hike Don’t Spike”
July 28, 2024, Oakland, CA
9:30 am - 1:30 pm (Pacific Time)
Our next Breakthrough T1D Hike Don’t Spike event for adults will be in Oakland on Sunday, July 28th. We’ll hike under the cool Redwoods and ferns of Reinhardt Redwood Regional Park and avoid the mid-summer heat, making a ~6 mile, 800’ elevation gain loop starting at the Canyon Meadow Staging Area. This dog-friendly, moderate hike will start out with a flat 2-mile warm-up along a wide trail, followed by a series of single-track ups and downs as we skirt along the side of the canyon, all the while under the shadows of redwoods. There may be some poison oak alongside the single-track trails, and a hiking pole may be useful for areas with roots and rocks. There is plenty of parking at the main and satellite lots, with bathrooms but little-to-no cell phone reception at the trailhead. This is the latest series of events designed for T1D adults who enjoy trail hikes of ~5-8 miles at 2-2.5 mph in the Bay Area with other like-minded T1D adults, and who enjoy the benefits for glucose control that hikes can provide. Before hitting the trail, we’ll share tips with each other on managing T1D in the great outdoors. If interested, please register for the hike on the 28th, or just sign up with Breakthrough T1D to be informed about future hikes. Hope to see you at Hike Don’t Spike soon!
