T1D Adults “Hike Don’t Spike”

August 18, 2024, Sausalito, CA
9:30 am - 1:30 pm (Pacific Time)

Our August Breakthrough T1D Hike Don’t Spike event for adults will be on Sunday, August 18th to Black Sands Beach via the Marin Headlands and Rodeo Valley.  We’ll start in the headlands and follow a mostly flat path that gradually descends into Rodeo Valley. After going over a short hill and down a long beach stairway, we’ll take a break at about the 4.5-mile point at beautiful Black Sands Beach. We’ll finish the ~6.5 mile, 1100’ gain hike with a gradual uphill to the starting point, finishing this big loop in about 3.5 hours.

The route is a mix of single-track trails, wide paths, and sandy steps with trailside native flowers that we’ll share with an occasional runner and horseback rider.  The hike may be bathed in sunshine with magnificent views of the Pacific and Golden Gate Bridge, cloaked in soothing fog, or both, so come prepared accordingly.  We’ll meet at 9:30AM at the Coastal Trail Parking Lot, with additional “scenic overview” parking along nearby eastbound Conzelman Rd.  There’s a bathroom at the start and above the beach, but no water beyond what you bring along with you.

This is the latest in a series of events designed for T1D adults who enjoy trail hikes of ~5-8 miles at 2-2.5 mph in the Bay Area with other like-minded T1D adults, and who enjoy the benefits for glucose control that hikes can provide.  Before hitting the trail, we’ll share tips with each other on managing T1D in the great outdoors.  If interested, please register for the hike on the 18th, or just sign up with Breakthrough T1D to be informed about future hikes.  Hope to see you at Hike Don’t Spike soon!
