Dear friends and family,
We are deeply honored to share our story as the 2026 Gala Family Honoree.
Peter and I have been married for over 23 years, and together we are raising three incredible children: twin boys, George and Jack (12), and our daughter Lily (9). Our family’s connection to type 1 diabetes (T1D) began long before George’s diagnosis. Peter was diagnosed with T1D at the age of 10, and his journey shaped much of our understanding of this disease.
Five years ago, that understanding become deeply personal. While on a family vacation, we noticed George, then 7, waking up repeatedly throughout the night to use the restroom. Because of Peter’s experience, we knew something wasn’t right. We tested George’s blood sugar, and our fear was confirmed – he, too, had type 1 diabetes.
Despite years of living alongside T1D through Peter, nothing prepared us for the heartbreak of watching our child begin this journey. After leaving Doernbecher Children’s Hospital, we entered a lifelong process of learning how to care for a child with T1D – and teaching George how to care for himself. There have been countless sleepless nights managing low blood sugars, along with the constant fear and anxiety that can arise at any hour of the day or night.
Through it all, George has shown extraordinary courage. He has learned how to monitor his blood sugar, count carbohydrates, and administer insulin – responsibilities no child should have to shoulder. T1D is a disease that forever changes a person’s life, and one that is often misunderstood by those who don’t live with it.
And yet, there is so much hope.
Because of advances in research and technology, living with T1D today looks very different than it did decades ago. Peter was in his early 30s when he received his first continuous glucose monitor; George had one within weeks of his diagnosis. Today, George uses an insulin pump, which has dramatically reduced dangerous lows and improved his overall glucose control. These innovations have been life-changing for our family – and they are only possible because of continued research.
We are proud and grateful to support this year’s Gala in the hope of a better future for George, Peter, and all those around the world – and their loved ones – who courageously navigate life with type 1 diabetes. Please join us in this important fight by purchasing individual tickets, hosting a table, donating an auction item, becoming a sponsor, or making a Fund A Cure contribution. Your gift will fuel hope and turn breakthroughs into reality.
With gratitude,
The Butler Family
