About
Our Breakthrough T1D Hike Don’t Spike event for adults on Saturday, February 7th takes us high above Gray Whale Cove just south of Pacifica, on a hike where you never lose sight of the Pacific Ocean. This moderately challenging 6.2 mile, 1000-feet total ascent hike has some short, steep, and rocky uphills and downhills that may be difficult for some (AllTrails map). The trail takes us up through low scrub (California Sagebrush, Coffeeberry, etc.), allowing unobstructed views (fog permitting) at multiple scenic overlooks on the way to the peak of San Pedro Mountain. The route back to the parking lot will take us directly above the Devils Slide Trail (old Rt 1 now closed for walking & biking) and the iconic graffiti-covered Devil’s Slide Bunker, while providing more sweeping views of the coastline. Once back at our cars, Montara State Beach awaits across the street, as do several options for late lunch in nearby Pacifica.
Of course, we’ll have plenty of time during this ~3-hour hike to exchange experiences, insights, and questions about T1D. This is a dog-friendly hike (as is the beach). There are some short, steep downhill sections of the trail with loose rocks that might be a challenge for some people.
We’ll meet promptly at 9:30 AM in the Montara State Beach/McNee Ranch parking lot on Highway 1 (Google Map link). Parking is free, and outhouse facilities are nearby.
