About

Our Breakthrough T1D Hike Don’t Spike event for adults on Saturday, April 11, will be a lovely trek through the rolling hills of Edgewood Park.  It’s rare and harsh serpentine soil, rich in heavy metals, fosters an incredible annual display of spring wildflowers. This moderate ~7-mile hike, with a 1,000-feet total ascent, is designed as “two lollipops inside a loop” (AllTrails map link, Edgewood Park map link) with options to shorten your route to ~4-5 miles if needed. The path goes mostly through exposed grassy hillsides with occasional breaks in shady woodlands – all of which support an exceptional variety of wildflowers that are tracked weekly (wildflower survey link) by park volunteers. April is expected to be the peak month for blooms.  The wildflowers also naturally attract deer, rabbits, butterflies, and birds to the park.

Of course, we’ll have plenty of time during this 3–4-hour hike to exchange experiences, insights, and questions about T1D.  Parking is free inside and just outside the park, with bathrooms available at the start. Dogs are not allowed in the park. We’ll meet promptly at 9:00 AM in the Edgewood Park main parking lot, near the Education Center building (Google Map link).
