Bria Edidin

Youth Ambassador, Southeast Florida Chapter President
Bria Edidin, 17, of Hollywood, Florida, was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at just three years old. Rather than let it define her from the sidelines, Bria has spent her life turning that experience into advocacy, starting young and never slowing down.
At just eight years old, Bria was selected to serve as a Delegate for Breakthrough T1D’s Children’s Congress, traveling to Washington, D.C. to sit face to face with federal lawmakers and advocate for research funding on behalf of kids living with T1D across the country. That early experience sparked a commitment to using her voice for the community.
Today, Bria serves as President of the Breakthrough T1D Southeast Florida Youth Ambassador program, mentoring the next generation of young advocates and helping them find the same confidence and purpose that shaped her own journey.
Luka Beccar Varela

Youth Ambassador
Luka was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes when he was just three years old. Since then, every year has brought new milestones, new freedoms, and new challenges, from finding trusted caregivers at school to learning to manage his own care as he’s grown. Luka has a family history with T1D too; his grandfather has lived with T1D for more than 50 years.
Now 11 and in fifth grade, Luka is an active, adventurous kid who loves dirt bikes, the ocean, fishing, golf and baseball. He is attending a school without a full-time nurse, and he has stepped up to manage much of his own care, texting his family throughout the day and taking real ownership of his diabetes. Rather than being held back, he has thrived, gaining confidence and independence that make his family incredibly proud.
Luka’s spirit for giving back shines through, too. This past summer, while on a family trip in the Bahamas, he and his cousins sold lures to raise money and chose to donate half of it to Breakthrough T1D. When his mom asked him why, Luka’s answer was simple: “Yeah, let’s do that so I don’t have to have diabetes anymore.”
That’s exactly what Breakthrough T1D is fighting for: a cure that means freedom from the alarms, the calculations, and the constant worry, so kids like Luka can simply be kids.
Zach Christo

Youth Ambassador
Zach Christo was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes in June 2020 at just 10 years old. Rather than let the diagnosis define him, Zach turned it into a launchpad, starting an Instagram account with his mom, @sugarandswaglife, to spread awareness and share his story. What began as fun videos helped Zach discover a new passion: acting.
Now in 11th grade, Zach is pursuing that passion as a TV and film actor and model, all while continuing to advocate for the T1D community. In 2025, he was selected as a Delegate for Breakthrough T1D’s Children’s Congress, traveling to Washington, D.C. to advocate directly to federal lawmakers on behalf of kids living with T1D. Outside of advocacy, Zach is a varsity football player and a red belt in Taekwondo.
Zach’s story is proof that finding your voice, whether on Instagram, in Washington, or on screen, is one of the most powerful tools in this fight for a cure.
Kaitlyn Gordon

Youth Ambassador
Kaitlyn Gordon, 17, was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes on April 20, 2016, just one week after her seventh birthday. Her mom, Erica, has lived with T1D for 49 years, since the age of 3, so Kaitlyn grew up watching her mom’s strength and resilience.
Kaitlyn and her family lead a Palm Beach Walk team, Kaitlyn’s T1D Warriors, raising funds each year to help create a world without T1D. As a Breakthrough T1D Youth Ambassador, Kaitlyn is a vocal advocate for the community, reminding supporters that while there’s no cure yet, there is hope, and that every dollar raised brings the mission closer to turning Type One into Type None.
