Southern Florida Chapter
Hello Friends and Supporters,

It is hard to believe spring is here already and we all have been living through this ongoing pandemic for a full year now. To say it has been a tough year for all is an understatement however if we have learned anything from this experience, it is that we are all resilient and together, we can overcome anything!  Because we still are unable to safely gather in person, we are doing our best to offer our T1D community opportunities to connect virtually.  Our Southern Florida One Walk Fundraising Event earlier this month was a big success!  We gathered on Zoom and shared ideas and information while connecting with our local One Walk community.  If you missed it, you can join us for our second Fundraising Night on April 15th. Register here. In March we also hosted our virtual meet ups for Teens, Children ages 9-12, Adults with T1D, and a Sunday brunch for all T1Ds! These meet ups have been so successful, and we can’t wait to see you at the next one! Click Here to register for any of our upcoming meet ups and events!

You will find all the details on these events below, along with information on our upcoming One Walk and Ride to Cure Diabetes program.  We miss seeing you in person and are hopeful that we will be able to gather again in the not-so-distant future.  Until then, we hope you will take the opportunity to join us virtually at an upcoming event!

We appreciate each and every one of you as we could not do what we do without YOU!  Thank you for your patience, understanding and continued support.  We are here for you so please do not hesitate to reach out to a team member if we can assist you in any way.  And be sure to check out our Social Media Pages and Southern Florida Chapter Website to stay up-to-date on all the latest information and happenings in our area.

With sincere appreciation,

The Southern Florida Chapter Team

Kathy, Jessica, Rebecca, Haley, Melissa, and Emily

National Volunteer Week is April 18-24! All week long, Breakthrough T1D will feature and recognize our incredible volunteer partners who are committed to creating a world without T1D. Even through challenging times, your dedicated support demonstrates just how much we can accomplish when we work together. This year’s National Volunteer Week theme is All for (Type) One working together to accelerate life changing breakthroughs. We simply could not do this work without ALL of you. We use this week to officially celebrate your volunteerism, but it goes without saying that we are endlessly grateful, every single day, for your time and commitment to our shared mission. From board, event committees and office volunteers, to advocacy leaders, outreach volunteers and youth ambassadors, we thank each and every one of you who share your talent, knowledge and passion with us. Together, we will continue to chart forward until living in a world without T1D becomes a reality. Thank you!

Breakthrough T1D is proud to announce a new partnership with ERinfo, the only medical alert service that provides medical first responders access to your information through a direct connection to FirstNet®, the government’s nationwide broadband network that equips responders to save lives and protect you throughout the US. ERinfo provides anywhere, anytime patient recognition and emergency notification to improve patient outcomes and reduce treatment times.

ERinfo’s patented technology uses facial recognition to match a field image taken by a medical first responder with your emergency information.  As an indication of ERinfo’s deep commitment to the safety of our nation’s first responders, ERinfoPRO for FirstNet® was evaluated for public safety relevancy and went through additional scrutiny to receive the FirstNet Certified™ credential.  After thorough inspection by FirstNet®, ERinfoPRO for FirstNet® demonstrated that it is highly secure with a high degree of data protection.

Breakthrough T1D and ERinfo are working together to educate the type 1 diabetes (T1D) community on the importance of having a medical alert service and being prepared for emergency situations.  Learn more about ERinfo at ERrinfo.me or sign-up using the 15% Breakthrough T1D discount (“JDRF15OFF”) here

Breakthrough T1D Celebrates New CDC COVID-19 Vaccine Prioritization Guidelines
Breakthrough T1D is proud to share that yesterday evening on March 29, 2021, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) announced a new update to its   COVID-19 vaccine prioritization guidelines.

What it is:

  • Under the new guidelines, individuals with type 1 diabetes (T1D) are now moved up to the phase 1c group alongside those with type 2 diabetes (T2D).
  • This new prioritization follows months of advocacy from Breakthrough T1D leadership and allies who met with CDC staff to share new research evidence which spotlights the elevated risk of COVID-19 on people with T1D.

Why it matters:

  • The new prioritized access to vaccines will save lives and reduce the risks of additional COVID-19 complications for those with T1D,as research has shown that people with T1D have three to four times higher risk of severe illness and hospitalization.
  • Since December 2020, Breakthrough T1D met with CDC staff to share the new evidence submitted comments and organized testimony to the CDC Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP), worked with other diabetes organizations and allies in Congress inform key decisionmakers, alerted health-focused news and media outlets, and developed a   COVID-19 Vaccine Access Toolkit  for the T1D community if they wished to take action in their respective states.
  • To date, 25 states have revised their T1D prioritization; however many states use CDC guidelines as a basis for their local phased roll-outs and the new update increases the likelihood of prioritization across multiple markets.
