Jill, Connor, and Ian followed different T1D journeys on the way to ending up together in the North Country of New York.
Connor was diagnosed in 2005 when Plattsburgh, NY had few resources for people with T1D, so Jill relied on supportive family and Breakthrough T1D to help Connor navigate managing diabetes while going to school and playing travel sports. She found a community for her, Connor, and their family. They Walked, threw themselves into Advocacy, and went to their first Ride to Cure in Burlington, VT.
Ian was diagnosed nearly 50 years ago. He was an active kid who loved the outdoors, and refused to let T1D define him, while managing his diabetes with tools that seem crude today. Years later, after moving to North Carolina for work, he joined the Piedmont Triad Chapter board, then went to his first Ride to Cure, in Death Valley. He was a coach for the program when he met Jill and Connor in Vermont.
Today, Connor is healthy and looks forward to marrying his longtime girlfriend, Michele. Jill and Ian are together in Plattsburgh, after reconnecting years after that first meeting. Their entire combined family continues to work to advance Breakthrough T1D’s mission, and Jill and Ian have taken leadership roles — Jill as a member of Advocacy’s Grassroots Leadership Team, and Ian as a member of the Global Mission Board. Although they prefer to work in the background, they’re proud to support the 2025
Fund a Cure. Ask them, and they’ll say, “Our family will do anything to bring us closer to cures.”
