Myles's Story
Hi, my name is Myles Avery, and I’m a 13-year-old boy living with Type 1 diabetes. I was diagnosed on October 21st, 2016, and since then, I’ve learned a lot about managing my condition. I’ve been involved in various sports since I was three years old, and I currently play organized lacrosse and basketball.
Managing diabetes can be challenging at times, but I always remind myself that it doesn’t define me. I look up to several professional athletes with Type 1, such as Orlando Brown Jr., an offensive tackle for the Cincinnati Bengals. His inspiring story motivates me to keep pushing forward.
I wear an insulin pump and a continuous glucose monitor (CGM) on and off the field or court. These devices are incredibly helpful in keeping my blood sugar levels in range, but they can sometimes be tricky because they can easily come off due to sweat. Additionally, with the level of activity I engage in, my numbers are also at risk of dropping low. To prevent this, I always keep my supplies nearby.
In all the sports I’ve played, my coaches and teammates have been incredibly supportive and understanding. They know my supply bag and often check in on me from the sidelines or bench to ensure I’m okay.
Despite these challenges, I remain focused on my sports and continue to work hard to achieve my goal of becoming an exceptional athlete.
