Adele's Story
Adele’s experience highlights several key aspects of living with and thriving with T1D. It is a balancing Act- Managing T1D in sports requires precise, individualized, and, at times, difficult, planning of insulin, nutrition, and exercise. Resilience and Empowerment- rather than letting her diagnosis slow her down. Lastly it is proven Discipline- Her success highlights how T1D management can foster, and be supported by, athletic discipline and consistent, healthy routines. She is a shining example of how T1D is not a barrier to performing at a high level in demanding sports like ice hockey and lacrosse.
Adele’s story is a powerhouse example of how T1D can be a catalyst for resilience rather than a limitation. Navigating the high intensity demands of Tier 1 ice hockey and lacrosse requires a level of discipline that most athletes never have to touch. Her “gritty” approach is clearly her edge—turning the constant data management of blood sugar into a masterclass in preparation and mental toughness. Since every T1D athlete’s “formula” is unique, it’s impressive that she’s dialed in her own strategy for such different aerobic profiles (the anaerobic bursts of hockey vs. the sustained running of lacrosse). During the early stages of her athletic career, Adele managed acute hypoglycemia during games with sugar packets available at the concession stand. Today, those experiences are behind her, as she has developed a proactive, rigorous routine the night before practices and games to maintain optimal blood sugar levels.
Athletics play a pivotal role in fostering discipline, academic focus, and both physical and mental well-being, particularly for young adults managing chronic conditions like Type 1 Diabetes (T1D). For 16-year-old Adele Wrisley, who was diagnosed just before her 6th birthday, sports have served as a powerful motivator to master her diabetes management, transforming a complex health challenge into a competitive advantage. Adele has never allowed T1D to dictate her limits. Instead, she has used it to fuel a “gritty” mindset, cultivating resilience, strength, and talent on and off the field. Currently a forward (#18) for the 2025-26 Rochester Jr. Americans 19U Tier 1 team and aiming for varsity lacrosse at Ithaca High School, Adele’s journey showcases how intensive, high-level sports require, and in turn support, a meticulous approach to health.
Athletes with T1D face a demanding balancing act, requiring precise management of nutrition, exercise, and insulin. Through years of trial and error, Adele has learned to master her blood sugar levels prior to, during, and after competitive games and training. Her dedication demonstrates that with the right, proactive approach, managing T1D does not restrict a young athlete’s potential, but rather builds the grit required to excel at the highest levels. Adele continues to thrive, using her journey to inspire others and prove that Type 1 diabetes is just another challenge to be overcome on the path to athletic success.
