Why I Walk: Danielle Onuffer

We want to thank Danielle Onuffer for sharing why she walks in the Breakthrough T1D Pittsburgh Walk. By opening up about her son’s challenges and hopes, Danielle helps shine a light on the realities of living with and supporting a loved one with T1D. Her story underscores the critical need for ongoing support and research. Danielle’s dedication not only emphasizes the significance of this cause but also inspires others to join the fight. Learn more about Danielle and her family’s journey below.

Q: Tell us your story, why do you walk?

A: I walk to support Breakthrough T1D so my son, Bryson, and all other type 1 warriors can see a future where they don’t have to worry about counting carbs, watching their glucose numbers, and deal with the endless jabs of needles. We want to turn type 1 to type none!

Q: How has T1D impacted your life?

A: Type 1 impacted our life when our son was diagnosed at the age of 7. Our world completely flipped upside down that day and will never be the same again. The constant worry and stress all day and night is endless. Bryson is a very active kid who loves sports and plays on two soccer teams. As much as we love watching him play soccer, this adds another level of stress to ensure his numbers stay in range for all his practices and games. We have had to run glucose tabs or juice boxes out to him while he is playing goalie and can’t get off of the field.  One day, I would love to not have to ask him what his number is or how he is feeling and just let him enjoy being a kid!

We would love for you to share your story here.
