Carter is 8 ½ years old and lives in Mosinee with his parents and 6 year old sister, Kira. He is in 3rd grade at Mosinee Elementary School. His favorite sport is baseball. He also enjoys playing football, basketball, Nerf guns, tubing, biking, hunting, and building forts.
Carter was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes (T1D) on January 22, 2013. He was 5 ½ years old at the time of diagnosis. Carter was sick with Influenza B, thrush in his throat, and strep throat. During this time he was drinking a lot of water and going to the bathroom often. His parents took him to the doctor 3 times in one week before they finally diagnosed him with T1D. He spent one night in the hospital. The next day the doctors educated his parents and sent them on their way home. That day changed all of their lives’ forever.
Carter was on insulin shots for 2 years before transitioning to an insulin pump. The pump has given him more freedom for playdates, sleepovers, activities, etc. It has also given him more control with regulating his blood sugar.
Carter enjoys attending the Breakthrough T1D events where he can meet other kids living with T1D and see that he is not the only one living with this disease. He enjoys participating in the Breakthrough T1D One Walk in Stevens Point. This is Carter’s 4th year doing the walk. He is determined to raise more money than last year for his team, Carter’s Clan. Carter’s goal is to find a cure for diabetes so that children like him don’t have to live with it anymore.
