The Desert Southwest Chapter strives to educate and generate awareness of Breakthrough T1D and type 1 diabetes (T1D) through outreach initiatives and community events!

2011 CSE & Breakthrough T1D Weekend_AcheryPhoenix – In September we are fortunate to offer two camp weekends in partnership with Camp Soaring Eagle where 20 kids between the ages of 8 and 15 who have been diagnosed with type 1 diabetes (T1D) will enjoy a fun weekend filled with indoor and outdoor activities!

Under the watchful eye of counselors and medical staff campers enjoy horseback riding, fishing, arts and crafts, archery, hiking, live entertainment and much more! Most importantly, campers gain friendships, grow and are empowered by taking on things they have never done before!

Tucson Family Retreat PhotoTucson – On Sunday, July 29th, 10 lucky Breakthrough T1D families will travel up to Sedona, AZ to participate in Camp Soaring Eagle’s 4-Day Family Retreat!  Families completed applications and were entered into a drawing for this fantastic trip.

While at the retreat, families will enjoy a magic show, arts and crafts, archery and various indoor and outdoor activities.  Counselors and medical staff are available to provide 24 hour care, delicious meals are served and through a family centered program attendees will have time to socialize! The retreat allows both children and parents time to relax, have fun and interact with one-another, offering peer-to-peer support.

Breakthrough T1D is incredibly grateful to Camp Soaring Eagle for this amazing opportunity!

NM Family Team Captain WorkshopNew Mexico – Held its 2012 Family Team Workshop this past Sunday, July 15th at the Radisson Park Inn and Water Park where families had some wet and wild fun after learning how to make a big splash with their walk fundraising this year!  Families had a chance to register for this year’s walk at computers facilitated by peer volunteer family team coaches to assist with the online process. Those in attendance had a chance to visit different booths chalk full of great Walk fundraising information ranging from Online Tools, to ideas for wrap-around events, to Social Media.   Families also got to hear great information from speakers who touched on topics such as the Kids Walk to Cure Diabetes, getting your company involved in your family team and Email, Email, Email through the Walk website. Breakthrough T1D New Mexico Family Walk Teams are ready to create a “big wave” of fundraising this year to help cure, treat and prevent TID.

Have you met someone new at one of our recent Breakthrough T1D events?  Register today for one of our three walk sites and celebrate Walk season together!
