My name is Sandy Mundell; my son was diagnosed little over a year ago.  I am honored to be the Nevada Chapter’s Parent Coffee Talk Chair.  I know first hand, if you’re the parent of a child with type 1 diabetes you’ve got your hands full.  There’s constant health maintenance, doctor’s visits, insurance mazes and new developments.  It can be overwhelming.  That’s where Parent Coffee Talk can help.

While there is no coffee to speak of, this networking group meets once a month to serve up information and diabetes-related discussions led by guest speakers.  No matter how long you’ve been managing your child’s diabetes, there’s always something new to learn.

Past speakers have included pediatric endocrinologists, diabetes social network leaders and advocates, all natural and dietary foodies and pharmaceutical representatives. All speakers have in some way been impacted by diabetes, whether they have it or someone close to them does, so they are passionate and understanding in their cause.

I have attended each Talk for the past year-and-a-half since my son was diagnosed and I always leave with some new bit of information.  But it’s more than just lectures and pamphlets.  Parent Coffee Talk is a social gathering of people brought together by one cause – our type 1 diabetic children.  I find that talking with other parents helps me to deal.  I can discuss things that no outsider to this disease understands.  Or I can be supportive of a parent whose child was just newly diagnosed.

These meetings go beyond just listening to someone speak.  They give me a sense of community while also providing new and different ways of helping me take care of my son.  There are also nutritious and yummy snacks to enjoy during the meeting.  I would love to meet you; I hope you’ll join us!

Parent Coffee Talk takes place on the third Wednesday of every month from 6:30-7:30 pm at the Breakthrough T1D office.
