Breakthrough T1D, formerly JDRF, applauds U.S. Senators Susan Collins (R-ME) and Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH), co-chairs of the Senate Diabetes Caucus, for leading a bipartisan letter of support for the Special Diabetes Program (SDP). This letter recognizes the many important contributions of this critical program, which funds transformative type 1 diabetes (T1D) research, and calls for its renewal. Fifty-five senators signed this letter, and it was delivered to Senate leadership on November 12.
Breakthrough T1D thanks Senators Collins and Shaheen for their tremendous leadership and all signees for their support for this essential program. Renewing the SDP is one of Breakthrough T1D’s top priorities. It has been instrumental in improving therapies that people with T1D rely on today, and contributes significantly towards future cures that will allow people with T1D to walk away from the disease for good.
The program is currently funded at $160 million annually and is set to expire on Dec. 31, 2024.
