Meet AJ Jordan: 2016 Amelia Island Rider

in

Type 1 has had an enormous impact on my family for as long as I can remember.  My father and uncle both died in their 40’s from complications caused by Type 1. My younger brother was diagnosed at age 11 and my younger sister was diagnosed at age 24.  I am the only child in my family without Type 1.

My sister and brother-in-law discovered the Breakthrough T1D Ride to Cure program and participated in their first ride the year after her diagnosis.  And though I would much prefer running to biking, they convinced me to ride in 2014 and it was an unforgettable experience.  This year will be my third ride.

For a long time Type 1 has been that thing that haunts my family…that thing that we felt powerless to do anything about, but the Breakthrough T1D Ride to Cure is changing that.  It has given my family and I the means and opportunity to fight.  It has given us a community of people to fight with and through this process I have grown to love biking.  Riding for the cure gives me the chance to partner with my brother and sister, and so many others, in their journey with Type 1 and I will continue to ride until Type 1 is Type None.
