Chief Mission Officer and Vice President, Research, Aaron Kowalski, was appointed Breakthrough T1D’s first Chief Mission officer in December 2014 and serves as a key link between Breakthrough T1D and the broad diabetes community. Dr. Kowalski combines his professional experience as a scientist with his personal experience of living with type 1 diabetes (T1D) for over 30 years to help guide and champion Breakthrough T1D’s programs focused on creating a world without T1D.

The Eastern Pennsylvania Chapter was very excited and honored to have him visit the chapter on Tuesday, November 28th. Dr. Kowalski delivered research updates during a luncheon at the Valley Forge Casino and then at a night event held in the home of Matthew & Lea Cohn.

At the luncheon, Dr. Kowalski delivered a research update to individuals that included volunteers, donors, and community partners that was informational and hopeful. He spoke on the first FDA approved first hybrid closed-loop system and impact the very exciting news was bringing to the T1D community. He also discussed some exciting things to come that included glucose responsive insulin, encapsulation, prevention and more.

A the nighttime event, in the welcoming home of Matthew & Lea Cohn, Dr. Kowlaski met with directors, board of chancellors, high level donors, corporate partners and some new friends to Breakthrough T1D. Sydney Cohn, Matthew & Lea’s eldest daughter living with T1D and who participated in the artificial pancreas clinical trials, introduced Dr. Kowalski to the attendees. He gave a very inspirational research update to the group and included topics discussed earlier in the day.

In giving both updates, Dr. Kowalski left a great impression on those who were able to attend. His message that great progress is being made was empowering, uplifting and motivating to keep working towards Breakthrough T1D’s vision of a world without type 1 diabetes.
