Gala Spotlight:
The 2017 Fund a Cure Speakers– Dr. Amy L Stankavage and her daughter, Ava Brielle Stankavage
Dr. Amy L Stankavage and her daughter, Ava Brielle Stankavage are from Pottsville, PA. Amy is 39 years old and graduated w/ her Doctor of Physical Therapy degree from Thomas Jefferson University. She works as the Lead Acute Care PT at LVHN-Schuylkill for the last 14 years. Amy was diagnosed with diabetes at age 19 while attending West Chester University. Although it was a shock, Amy took diabetes by storm, and never looked back. She was able to achieve all of her goals but just had to plan a little more frequently. She ran a half marathon, coached high school basketball, worked full time, received her Doctorate, ran and walked in many Breakthrough T1D funded races, became a mentor for the faces of T1D, and most importantly became a mom to a beautiful and special daughter, Ava. Ava is currently 5 years old, and goes to Kindergarten at St Clair Elementary School. Ava was diagnosed with T1D at age 2.5. After the diagnosis, Ava said to her mom, “Mom, now we are diabetes buddies!” She is involved in gymnastics and dance, and enjoys singing and playing with her friends. She is able to independently test her blood glucose and work her Omnipod pump with minimal help. Amy and Ava were chosen to be speakers at the Breakthrough T1D Hershey Elegance Gala in June of 2016, and now “The Diabetes Buddies” are proud to again represent the Breakthrough T1D as the speakers for the Allentown Passport to a Cure in April of 2017.
