2017 Ride Champions for the Eastern PA Chapter

Tell us a little about yourself!

Tim and I met in college and have been married for 28 years. I am a registered dietitian and Tim is a management consultant. We live in Perkasie PA. We have 3 children, our oldest is Michael is a video production associate in NYC and is married to our wonderful daughter-in-law Lauren, and our twins Melanie, an engineer in NYC, and Teresa who works for the Breakthrough T1D.

Why do you participate in the Ride to Cure program? What is your motivation for training and fundraising?

Our twin daughters both have t1d. Teresa was diagnosed when she was 4 years old (now 23) and Melanie when she was 19 years old. Since 1998, there is not a day that goes by that we don’t think of how much we want a cure for diabetes for our daughters. We have participated in many Breakthrough T1D fundraisers and programs over the years including outreach, walks, galas, rides, education days, and more. We enjoy the rides as a physical challenge for ourselves and as a way to raise money for research for a cure. As challenging as the ride is for us, it is nothing in comparison to what our daughters, and others living with t1d, are challenged with every day.

How many Breakthrough T1D Ride to Cure Diabetes destination rides have you participated in and where did they take place?

This year will be our 3rd ride, we are riding in Saratoga Springs NY. Our fist ride was in Death Valley, CA in 2003. Thirteen years later we decided to try another ride and participated in the Amelia Island FL ride last October, It was amazing to see how the ride program had grown since our first ride.

What do you like most about being a part of the Eastern Pennsylvania Chapter Ride team?

We really appreciated all the support from Coach Steve in preparation for the ride. We also appreciated all the logistic support from the Eastern PA chapter. The best part of being a member of the Eastern PA ride team was the comradery during the ride weekend! It was so much fun!

Thoughts on the Ride to Cure Diabetes program to pedal away with:

Our main thought is : just do it! Give it a try. Don’t be intimidated by the ride or the fundraising, it was all easier than we thought it would be. The ride weekend is very inspirational and its wonderful to be with a group of people who has the same passion for a cure.
