Day 8 – Meet Julia
Julia was diagnosed with T1D when she was 7-months-old. She started out on insulin shots and then at 16-months-old was put on an insulin pump. Since she was a toddler, Julia has been a youth ambassador for the Breakthrough T1D, participating in many fundraising events, including “Walk for a Cure,” which she has done every year since her diagnosis. She has spoken to so many others with diabetes and even attended a diabetes camp for the first time last summer.
At only five-years-old, Julia has done so much. She has her struggles but it doesn’t get her down (she is a cheerleader and loves it)! About a year ago, she was put on a continuous glucose monitor. It has helped her school nurse and teacher, as well as helped her become more aware of her high and low blood sugars. She most recently helped her mom with a glucometer training to train EMT’s on using them and recognizing what an insulin pump and CGM are and how they are used.
The hardest thing has been getting a babysitter who is comfortable taking care of her. She is strong willed and very smart. Nothing stops her from doing what she wants to do.
