Day 16 – Meet Kevin
Kevin is a fun loving, rambunctious 2 and a half year old who loves to have fun running around, playing with his older brother, and being a goofball. Shortly before his first birthday he was diagnosed with T1D. Ever since then he has been going through a daily regimen of three insulin injections, 5-8 finger sticks checks, and a strict diet in an attempt to keep his glucose levels in a healthy range. Unfortunately that goal is nearly impossible given the numerous factors that affect glucose levels; food, exercise, growth, stress, weather, to name a few, and we are regularly having to correct his lows and highs at all times throughout the day and night.
We are now in the process of putting Kevin on a continuous glucose monitor, an external device partly inserted under the skin which will allow us to see his sugar levels continuously throughout the day. We initially resisted doing this because he is so young, but his sugar levels are becoming increasingly volatile as he gets older and the monitor will be helpful when he starts preschool this coming fall.
Despite Kevin’s diagnosis he remains a happy, loving, fun and energetic two year old. Since day one, we immediately connected with Breakthrough T1D and have met unbelievably supportive staff and families in the same situation as ours. Breakthrough T1D has been enormously helpful to us, providing invaluable information and resources that allow us better manage Kevin’s diabetes. More importantly they do incredible work raising money which is making great progress towards the cure, treatment, and prevention of diabetes. We are confident by the time our son Kevin reaches high school, and likely much sooner, he will be managing his diabetes very differently than he is now, largely due to the efforts of the Breakthrough T1D.
