Day 11 – Madelyn
in Awareness
Madelyn is 5 years old. She was diagnosed at the age of 27 months with Type 1 Diabetes (TID). It has been an amazing experience, both good and bad. Madelyn is healthier now than she was before her diagnosis. Having diabetes takes a toll on the whole family especially her. She is a trooper. Very rarely does she let it get her down. In the 3 years since her diagnosis it was only recently that she expressed her feelings that she wished she didn’t have diabetes. It hit both my husband and myself in the gut. We stopped and showed her pictures of herself from the months before her diagnosis and how sick she was and unhappy looking. Then we showed her more recent pictures of herself. And even she saw how happy she was. She saw how she had grown and looked healthier. The recent pictures made her smile.
Our tactic worked for now but we know this is going to be brought up again as she gets older. This is why we pray and fundraise for a cure so that she will not have to worry about this disease.
Maddie is an active happy little girl. She loves Preschool and playing with her friends. Madelyn is finishing up half day Pre-K and will be gearing up for full day Kindergarten in the fall. She is ready and we will be too. She is recently a new big sister to her baby brother and we are so proud of her.
We are teaching Madelyn to let nothing stand in her way. She will learn that she can do anything, be anything she wants as long as she works hard for it.
Madelyn loves being a youth ambassador for Breakthrough T1D. She likes being involved in the activities. All the staff at Breakthrough T1D has welcomed her and our family. This support has been important to our dealing with T1D.
