Help Us Change Kaylynn’s Odds!

Hi, my name is Kaylynn Bentsen and I am 10 years old.  I was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes when I was 5 years old.  Diabetes can be hard, really hard some days more than others, but I still find something to enjoy every day.  I have so much support from my family, my friends, and of course from the Breakthrough T1D.  There are upsides and downsides to having diabetes.  Some of the upsides are going to special events!  Such events include the Breakthrough T1D walk, which my family and I have been doing since I was diagnosed.  I also love meeting other kids with Type 1 Diabetes who know what I am going through and can understand how I feel.  Some downsides to this disease are I have to prick my finger 6 to 10 times per day depending on what my blood sugars are.  These numbers will determine how I feel on a daily basis.  I hate when my blood sugars are too high because I get nauseous, feel tired and thirsty, and have thrown up at times.  When my blood sugars are too low I feel dizzy, confused, and nauseous as well.  Another downside is when my activities are affected.  Sometimes I have to be removed from a soccer game due to low blood sugars or not be able to participate in practice.  Water activities are tough for me as well because I am constantly leaving the water to check my number.  Although it is tough sometimes, I don’t let it get me down.  I have diabetes but diabetes doesn’t have me!  I love everything the Breakthrough T1D is doing to make it easier for me.  I love being a Youth Ambassador and I look forward to the day there is a cure for Type 1 Diabetes!
