Help Us Change Madeline’s Odds
in Awareness
I always loved sleepovers with my friends but in May 2016 I was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes and it has changed my life forever. A few months after my diagnosis, I got my first CGM. The great thing is that it alerts me when I am high or low. My parents were finally letting me do sleepovers again and I was very happy. Unfortunately at a recent sleepover, my alarm kept going off all night because my blood sugars were low. I thought this was a good thing because it let me know that I needed to take something to regulate my bg. The next morning my friends who thought I was asleep kept going on and on about how annoying it was and how they didn’t get any sleep. Now they don’t want to have sleepovers with me again. I don’t think this is very nice. It’s not my fault that I have diabetes and that machine keeps me alive. They should be more supportive and have a little compassion. Nobody knows how it feels to have diabetes unless they have it. I hope that they find a cure but until then I’ll fight to live a normal life.
