One Walk Team Spotlight: Paige’s Parade

With just 10 days to go until we head to Merrillville for our first Walk of 2016, here is the latest installment of our seven-part Walk Team Spotlight series! We are highlighting one Breakthrough T1D One Walk team each week between August 17th and October 2nd.
This week’s team is “Paige’s Parade” from the Schaumburg Walk site.
Who are you walking for?
We walk for our daughter, Paige, who was diagnosed with diabetes when she was 10-years old (she is now 17). Now we know many people who have T1D and walk for all of them as well.
Why did you pick your team’s name?
Paige’s Parade is named after our daughter. We wanted to have an upbeat name for our team and thought a parade matched the feeling of our team walking together to celebrate our fundraising for a cure.
How long have you had your team?
We’ve had our team for eight years, but we also walked the year before Paige’s diagnosis for a friend in our Girl Scout troop.
What is your favorite memory from your first Walk?
Our family was overcome with emotion at all the support the Breakthrough T1D One Walk provided. Everything from the Breakthrough T1D staff and volunteers there who set up a great site for the event, the thousands of walkers there to support the cause, and the overall feeling of “it takes a village” with all of the villagers in attendance!
What are some of your Walk Day traditions?
Our Paige’s Parade team meets at our tent for a Walk Day picture. After the Walk we go to a nearby restaurant that has a fundraising day with a percentage of the proceeds going to Breakthrough T1D. Then we visit the houses of two friends that have children with T1D to celebrate the day with them.
