Expanding Its T1D Network: Grosse Pointe/East Side Breakthrough T1D Networking Coffee Group
in General
The Grosse Pointe/East Side Group is welcoming new members to build upon its community of T1D support. Members are primarily from Grosse Pointe and the surrounding communities, but all are welcome.
Comprised of approximately 35 families, Lora Tod oversees the group, which provides a small town atmosphere where members can get to know their neighbors and develop a support system throughout the community. “Knowing who has T1D near you and being there for one another makes it easier to cope with T1D, learn from one another and provide support when you need it,” said Lora.
The Grosse Point/East Side Group is focused on in-person meet ups monthly at a local restaurant, and recently, Lora has incorporated more guest speakers and special events into the mix of support for the group, such also bowling events and summer picnics. The group focuses on helping the newly diagnosed and providing education opportunities. Recent discussions have included the benefits of using CGM technology, not limiting your choices in life due to Diabetes, and whether or not to go on the pump.
One of the great advantages of the group is the participation of families with all aged children with Diabetes, many of those who have been diagnosed for 5-10 years, or longer. This lends a great level of expertise to those that are newly diagnosed.
If you are from the Grosse Pointe/East Side area and want to join the Networking Coffee Group, please contact Lora at loraftod@gmail.com. Lora also oversees a Facebook group and can provide information and access about joining the group online.
