2014 Roanoke Walk to Cure Diabetes
in General
It was a beautiful day for the Breakthrough T1D Roanoke Walk to Cure Diabetes on September 28th. Over 1,000 people came to the Virginia Museum of Transportation to walk towards a CURE and turn type one into type none. There were 52 local corporate teams, 73 family teams, and 6 school teams represented at the walk. Over 1,300 people registered for the event.
Walkers enjoyed an expanded Kids’ Corner with carnival games and interactive activities. Viva La Cupcake and Deb’s Lemonade were there handing out free samples. Friendship Retirement Community, the 2014 Corporate Chair, surprised everyone by hosting local sports stars Luke Hancock and Mikey O’Brien. At 2:00 p.m., the walk kicked off and everyone headed onto the route. Downtown Roanoke looked great with hundreds of Breakthrough T1D supporters filling the streets. Walkers had a blast once they returned to the museum with a free picnic by Kroger and music by Barefoot West. It was truly a day of fun, hope, family, and friends. Over $434,000 has been raised and the Greater Blue Ridge Chapter is expected to meet their goal of $808,000 by spring of next year.
Thank to everyone who participated!!!
