Volunteering with Breakthrough T1D Changes Lives

“Volunteers do not necessarily have the time; they have the heart.”

My name is Balsam Hamid and I have been a part of the Breakthrough T1D Family for over 5 years, including two years serving on the Breakthrough T1D Denver One Walk Volunteer Committee. I joined Breakthrough T1D after a child who attended my preschool (I’m an educator) was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes. This child and his family opened the door for me to learn more about type 1 diabetes and motivated me to be part of a team to find a cure. Over time I realized I wanted to not only raise funds, but also become a volunteer. The choice to be a volunteer was amazing and rewarding.  I love watching my fellow volunteers work together to make the Walk Day celebration possible! It is amazing to see the volunteers come together to create a special day for families and friends to come out and walk … towards a cure. Watching loved ones enjoy the beautiful Walk day reminds me that my decision to be a volunteer for the walk was worth it.

Breakthrough T1D is a volunteer-driven organization and leadership is critical in developing and managing the largest T1D events in the Rocky Mountains.
