What is #Coverage2Control?
For those with type 1 diabetes (T1D), the ability to control their disease is critical to survival. So is coverage. Insurers have a responsibility to help. Breakthrough T1D, together with the T1D community, is calling on insurance companies to provide their T1D members with three things to give them control:
- Affordability: Predictable and reasonable out-of-pocket costs for insulin and diabetes management tools.
- Choice: The freedom to choose the insulin pump that is right for them, which means no exclusive agreements with pump makers that would limit choice.
- Coverage: Cover all life-saving technology, including artificial pancreas systems.
Through Coverage2Control, Breakthrough T1D is advocating for coverage that enables T1D control and supports the continued innovation that makes managing diabetes easier.
Why the Campaign?
Right now, the ability people have to control their T1D is increasingly at risk. It is becoming harder and more expensive. Costs for insulin and diabetes management tools have soared. Meanwhile, insurers have taken steps that limit choice and coverage of life-saving technologies.
Giving people with T1D control over their choices and their healthcare costs is not only the right thing to do; it’s also good for insurers’ bottom line. By taking action, insurers will help people with T1D avoid complications that fuel higher healthcare costs for everyone — including insurers.
Our Impact So Far
- More than 50,000 people signed the Coverage2Control petition, and 12 major diabetes and health groups signed on as partners.
- Breakthrough T1D delivered the petition and the names of everyone who signed them to the 25 largest health insurance companies in the country.
- Breakthrough T1D supporters pushed Anthem to cover artificial pancreas systems for its members with T1D.
- UnitedHealthcare announced it will expand the drug discounts it receives to its members. UHC members in the specific plans affected by this change who have T1D will benefit from lower out-of-pocket costs for insulin.
- Following pressure from the Coverage2Control campaign, Aetna took similar measures as UHC, and announced it will also pass on drug discounts directly to members covered under the company’s fully insured commercial products.
