Winter 2013 Issues: Top Research Highlights and Cool Research News
in General
This season’s Top Research Highlights brings you news about a study that found that normal bacteria living in the intestines-called gut microbes-may influence the development of autoimmune disorders, including type 1 diabetes (T1D). Also highlighted is a Breakthrough T1D-funded study that used pancreases donated to the Network for Pancreatic Organ Donors with Diabetes (nPOD) to determine that that people at risk of developing T1D have smaller pancreases and fewer insulin-producing beta cells than people who are not at risk for the disease.
We also report on researchers using nanoparticles to potentially thwart the misguided immune attack on beta cells that eventually leads to T1D, and feature an exciting partnership between Breakthrough T1D and Tandem Diabetes Care to create a first-of-its-kind, dual-chamber infusion pump that can simultaneously deliver two hormonal drug therapies.
In this issue you will also read about a new award created to honor longtime Breakthrough T1D friend and esteemed diabetes researcher Dr. George Eisenbarth, M.D., Ph.D., as well as Congress’ renewal of the Special Diabetes Program.
For our younger audiences, please see the current issue of Cool Research News, which includes information on the Tandem partnership and the study about bacteria that may affect T1D development.
