The Breakthrough T1D New Jersey Metro & Rockland County Chapter has created a Youth Ambassador (YA) Program! Ambassadors will have year round involvementĀ in providing awareness to our community while giving volunteer hours to Breakthrough T1D to support its mission to decrease the burden of T1D until we achieve a world where type one becomes type none.

What is a Youth Ambassador?
Youth Ambassadors are young people with type 1 diabetes (T1D), between the ages of 6 and 20, who are willing to tell their story in order to increase awareness of type 1 diabetes and who are interested in becoming involved with volunteer efforts of the Breakthrough T1D New Jersey Metro & Rockland County Chapter.

What does a Youth Ambassador do?
We need your voice, your participation and your leadership.

  1. Ā Provide health education to the local community through the YA Speakers Bureau:
    • Public speaking and presentations to schools, hospitals, companies, and organizations
    • Production of radio and TV PSAā€™s
    • Health Fair participation
  2. Represent Breakthrough T1D at local third party events
  3. Perform general public relations activities
  4. Create thank you cards, awards, medallions, and other special gifts
  5. Provide office assistance (assist with invitation mailings, etc.)
  6. Participate in Gala activities including the Kids Art Project
  7. Participate in One Walk and Kids Walk activities
  8. Participate as a YA Buddy at the TypeOneNation Summit
  9. Make calls to Breakthrough T1D donors and sponsors to thank them for their support
  10. Adopt a National Sponsor Store (Stop & Shop, Marshallā€™s, Auto Zone, etc.)
    • Visit the store during their fundraising campaign week to say thank you
    • Send a photo to the chapter documenting your visit

What are the Youth Ambassador Requirements?Ā 

  1. Have type 1 diabetes
  2. Have a positive outlook on life with diabetes!
  3. Be between 6 and 20 years of age
  4. Commit to participating in the program for one full year (January ā€“ December, 2018)
  5. Complete at least 10 hours throughout the year in volunteer service at Breakthrough T1D events and community outreach dealings
  6. Make your best effort to attend 3 chapter events and/or activities
  7. Obtain parental permission in writing to be a part of the YA Program
  8. Provide a short personal statement (details provided on the application)
  9. Arrange for transportation to and from Breakthrough T1D responsibilities and social activities
  10. Participate in at least one of these fundraising efforts:
    • Create your own Family Walk Team
    • Become a fundraising member on another YA Family Walk Team
    • Recruit your school for the Kids Walk Program
    • Procure a YA inspired auction item or package for the Breakthrough T1D Gala

Please note: Application deadline is Friday, December 1, 2018. Youth Ambassadors who volunteer this year at our One Walk events or other fall/winter programs, will earn credit towards their 2018 requirements.
