Bella Left & Melinda Right
For more than a decade, Melinda Clark, has been a dedicated volunteer and advocate for Breakthrough T1D. As a pediatrician, Melinda has always been deeply committed to the health and well-being of children—but her connection to type 1 diabetes (T1D) became profoundly personal when her daughter, Bella, was diagnosed at just 11 months old.

Since then, Melinda has turned her family’s journey into meaningful action. She has played an active role in raising awareness and funds to support research, treatment, and ultimately a cure for T1D. Each year, Melinda leads her family’s One Walk team, which has not only grown into a strong fundraising force but also into a close-knit support community. What started as a single team has evolved into a broader network affectionately known as the “Sugar Free Gang,” a group that now organizes local support initiatives and even a summer camp group for children in the Albany area living with T1D.
Through fundraising events, community outreach, and her professional work, Melinda uses every opportunity to advocate for those living with T1D. As a pediatrician, she brings a unique perspective to her volunteer efforts—combining clinical expertise with lived experience as a parent. She actively raises awareness within the medical community, encouraging early recognition, improved care, and a deeper understanding of life with T1D beyond the clinical setting.
For Melinda, volunteering is about much more than fundraising—it’s about connection. She has found a sense of purpose in bringing people together, creating spaces where families can support one another and feel less alone in their journeys. “Strangers become teammates—united by a shared mission to make life better for those living with T1D,” she reflects.

Bella
Much of Melinda’s inspiration comes from her daughter Bella, whose resilience continues to shape her outlook. She describes strength as something that shows up in everyday moments—the choice to push forward when things feel difficult, to educate others, and to advocate for better understanding. Bella’s courage in facing the realities of T1D has inspired not only Melinda, but also countless others in their community to approach challenges with grace and determination.
Melinda hopes her story encourages others to get involved. Whether it’s volunteering time, sharing personal experiences, or contributing to fundraising efforts, she believes every action makes a difference. “Every breakthrough in T1D research is powered by people who give their time, energy, and heart,” she shares. “There’s a place for everyone in this mission.”

Through her leadership, compassion, and dedication, Melinda Clark exemplifies the power of community and the impact of turning personal challenges into purpose. Her work continues to inspire hope and reminds us all that progress is possible when people come together in support of a shared cause.
