For Lisa Lascher, volunteering with Breakthrough T1D is deeply personal—it is rooted in family, resilience, and a commitment to change the future of type 1 diabetes (T1D).
As an advocate and leader, Lisa’s connection to T1D spans generations. Her father has lived with T1D for decades, and in 2020, her son Max was diagnosed. What could have been an overwhelming chapter became a turning point—one that inspired Lisa to channel her family’s experience into meaningful action.

Since then, Lisa has become a dedicated and influential member of the Breakthrough T1D community. Lisa serves on the New York City Chapter Board, contributes to both the Walk and Gala committees, and leads the NYC parent support group—creating space for families to connect, learn, and feel supported. Through leadership, fundraising, and advocacy, Lisa plays a vital role in advancing the organization’s mission and strengthening its community.
One of Lisa’s most meaningful milestones has been stepping outside of the comfort zone to run a first marathon with the Breakthrough T1D NYC Marathon team. That achievement reflects not only determination, but also the power of purpose. Volunteering has also become a shared family journey—Lisa has had the opportunity to involve family members in fundraising events, and witnessing Max grow into an advocate has made the work even more impactful.

Lisa’s inspiration is simple yet powerful: family. Motivated by a parent’s hope and a child’s future, Lisa is committed to ensuring that families facing a T1D diagnosis have better tools, stronger support systems, and ultimately, access to a cure.
Lisa’s advice to others: There is a place for everyone in this community. Whether through volunteering, fundraising, or sharing a story, every contribution matters—and together, those efforts bring us closer to a world without T1D.
