For Laurie Basloe, type 1 diabetes (T1D) has never defined what’s possible it has simply shaped a lifelong commitment to advocacy, education, and community. Diagnosed at just seven years old, Laurie has spent decades navigating the daily realities of T1D while using her voice to uplift and empower others facing similar journeys.

Today, Laurie channels that same passion into her career as a teacher in Brooklyn, where she is entering her 22nd year in the classroom. Her dedication to helping others learn, grow, and feel seen extends well beyond her profession it’s at the heart of everything she does.

Living with T1D requires constant attention and resilience. As Laurie shares, it’s a condition that doesn’t take breaks, every meal, workout, illness, or stressful moment can impact blood sugar levels. Yet through it all, she has developed a strong mindset grounded in perseverance and optimism.
For Laurie, one of the most meaningful aspects of her journey has been the T1D community. Being surrounded by others who understand the “literal highs and lows” brings a sense of connection and support that is both powerful and deeply personal.

“It reminds me that I’m never navigating this journey alone.”

This sense of belonging continues to motivate her to stay involved and give back.

Laurie’s commitment to the T1D community shows up in many ways, from advocacy and awareness to fundraising efforts supported by her friends and family. Over the years, she has inspired those around her to rally behind the cause, demonstrating the ripple effect one passionate individual can create.

One particularly meaningful fundraising partnership emerged with her childhood best friend, whose son was diagnosed with T1D in 2020. Together, they brought their shared experiences and support systems to amplify awareness and impact.

Her advocacy also extends into everyday moments. Laurie recalls a powerful experience in her classroom when a student with T1D wore a continuous glucose monitor (CGM). At the time, Laurie had been hesitant to try one herself, but she chose to wear one in solidarity, showing her student there was nothing to be embarrassed about.
That simple act created a deeper connection and became a meaningful turning point for both of them.

Laurie is passionate about educating others and breaking down common misconceptions about T1D. One myth she frequently encounters is the idea that people with T1D can’t eat sugar—a misunderstanding that oversimplifies such a complex condition.

Through her advocacy, Laurie emphasizes that while T1D presents daily challenges, it does not prevent individuals from living full, dynamic, and successful lives. Her message is clear: knowledge, support, and determination can make all the difference.

Outside of her work and advocacy, Laurie’s life is rich with creativity and energy. Before becoming an educator, she was a professional dancer—an experience that continues to influence her love for the arts. Today, she enjoys sports, music, Broadway shows and exploring New York City with family and friends.

Her story is a reminder that living with T1D does not mean putting passions on hold—it simply means approaching them with resilience and adaptability.

Having been diagnosed in 1987, Laurie has witnessed firsthand the incredible advancements in diabetes care—from the absence of modern technology to today’s insulin pumps, CGMs, and smartphone connected tools.

These changes fuel her hope for the future. She believes strongly in continued progress and ultimately, a cure, and remains committed to being part of that journey.

“Every new breakthrough gives me hope that the next generation will have an easier journey than mine.”

Laurie’s message to others living with T1D is both simple and powerful:

“Type 1 diabetes is part of your story, but it doesn’t have to define it. Don’t let it stop you from pursuing the things you love.”

Through her dedication, compassion, and unwavering optimism, Laurie Basloe continues to make a meaningful difference proving that even in the face of constant challenges, it’s possible to live boldly, give back generously, and inspire others along the way.
