Breakthrough T1D will honor the supporters, researchers, volunteers and all those dedicated to finding a cure for diabetes at the 13th Annual Promise Ball, April 21, 2012 at the Hilton San Diego Bayfront. More than 400 guests are expected to jump Into the Blue for a Cure with the award-winning, local dance band, Liquid Blue. Since the inaugural Promise ball in 1999, the event has raised over $10 million for type 1 diabetes (T1D) research.
“With each advance in research over the years, we learn more about diabetes, more about what it takes for people to lead healthier, better lives and more about what it takes to find a cure.” said Breakthrough T1D Board member Chris Stiehl, who has lived with T1D for over 50 years.
The Promise Ball is Breakthrough T1D’s largest fundraising event and supports life-saving research that is moving us toward a cure on several scientific fronts. “From regeneration and immune therapies to the pursuit of an artificial pancreas, San Diego has world class institutes researching ground-breaking projects” said Diane Goodman, Breakthrough T1D Promise Ball Chair.
Everyday 40 children and 38 adults are diagnosed with this life threatening disease. In San Diego, Breakthrough T1D-funded research is currently taking place at The Salk Institute, The Pediatric Diabetes Research Center at UCSD, The Scripps Research Institute, La Jolla Institute of Allergy and Immunology, and many other local institutions. The scientific advances made in type 1 research have implications for the 280 million people living with all types of diabetes and tens of millions of others with related diseases.
