Participate in Clinical Trials: You Can Make a Difference

in , ,

Have you registered yourself on the Breakthrough T1D clinical trial match tool?  Answer 10 easy questions and you will be matched to a clinical trial in your area in 60 seconds.   You may ask why clinical trials are important?  It is through these studies that researchers can determine if new medications and devices are safe and effective in diabetes treatment.  Without these types of trials, we would not have our continuous glucose sensors, insulin pumps or necessary medications. I can tell you from first hand experience how important it is that as Type 1s, we all participate in trials.

My name is Carrie Khouri and I was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes 51 years ago, long before the first blood machines were ever available.  The first home blood glucose machine looked like a presidential football.  It was about 9 inches by 6 inches and it was housed in a foam padded brief case.  It had to remain stable on a flat surface in your home.  You could not carry it with you. All I can say is I am extremely grateful for the technology that we have today.  Without clinical trials, we would not have these advancements.  The more people who participate in clinical trials, the faster we advance toward a cure or prevention.

If you have questions about clinical trials or need help to find a clinical trial, please contact me, Carrie Khouri, at  Not only am I a lifelong Type 1, but I have worked in clinical trials for the past 30 years.  I am also your Breakthrough T1D Clinical Trial Education Volunteer (CTEV) for the Los Angeles area.
