Why I Walk: Christopher Kweder

We had the chance to speak with Christopher Kweder about his experience with Type 1 Diabetes (T1D). Although he doesn’t have T1D himself, he closely experiences its impact through his daughter, Gwen. Christopher and his family have graciously shared their perspective on supporting loved ones with T1D in the questions below:

Q: Tell us your story, why do you walk?

A: I walk for my daughter, Gwen (age 9). As a parent of a Type 1 child, you can’t help but feel slightly responsible for their diagnosis & struggle. However, seeing Gwen’s resilience, determination & courage continue to motivate me to help her in any way possible. I walk to show her that anything is possible if you put your mind to it & truly believe it’s possible. I walk to help inspire her to never give up on her dreams & to remind her that she is capable of great things. I walk to hopefully tell her, and those like her, that we were able to turn Type One into Type None!

Q: How has T1D impacted your life?

A: Apart from the obvious ways that our lives have been impacted by T1D, there have been other ways as well. We have had the opportunity to meet some amazing & inspiring people, both locally & nationally. We have participated in the One Walk, Kid’s Marathon & Promise Gala, all benefiting BreakthroughT1D. My wife & I have gone to Gwen’s school to educate & advocate on her behalf.

Join Christopher and his family in the fight to end T1D at the Pittsburgh BreakthroughT1D Walk 2024 on Saturday, November 2nd. Register your team and donate here.

We would love for you to share your story here.
