Today, Breakthrough T1D, formerly JDRF, the leading global type 1 diabetes (T1D) research and advocacy organization, welcomed a 6-3 Supreme Court decision upholding the constitutionality of an Affordable Care Act requirement that insurance companies cover certain preventive care recommended by an expert panel- the United States Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF).

Breakthrough T1D recently submitted an application to the USPSTF to secure a recommendation for T1D screening. A recommendation from USPSTF would make screening for T1D part of routine preventive medical services, solidify it as a standard of care, offer guidance for health care providers, and ensure coverage of T1D screening by all insurance plans.

“Preventive health care is essential to addressing our nation’s most pressing health challenges—especially chronic diseases like type 1 diabetes,” said Breakthrough T1D’s Chief Global Advocacy Officer Lynn Starr. “By detecting T1D early, before symptoms appear and insulin is required, we can reduce the risk of life-threatening complications at diagnosis. Early screening empowers individuals to access therapies that delay disease onset, participate in clinical trials, and prepare for future care needs. It’s a simple step that can dramatically alter the course of the disease and significantly improve outcomes for those at risk.”

Breakthrough T1D led a community effort of key clinical experts and diabetes patient advocacy organizations to build a strong application to the USPSTF rooted in nearly three decades of research supporting T1D early detection.

The USPSTF is an independent body of experts appointed by the U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services to evaluate and make evidence-based recommendations on how to improve the health of Americans. The USPSTF’s recommendations cover a wide range of preventive services, including screenings, counseling, and medications.  More information about the process, timeline, and Breakthrough T1D’s application status can be found at BreakthroughT1D.org.
